BSG Ficlet: Acceptance
Characters: Sam Anders and Sharon Agathon
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Set during the "Missing Year".
Summary: Unlikely friends.
Note: prompt ficlet. Trying to get the mojo back, people. prompt me.

"This is for you," Sam brought his arm from behind his back and held out the bottle toward Sharon. She took it, arching a brow at him curiously. He grinned at her. "Sharon Agathon. I thought the bride should have a present. It's traditional."

She looked down at the full bottle, and the twist of wire someone, probably Sam himself, had put around the neck and tied into a bow. The gesture made a small hard lump form in her chest and her eyes suddenly felt hot. Silly, to almost cry over a bottle of Chief's hooch.

Her grip tightened, and she bit her lip so she could find her voice. "Thank you, Sam."

"You're welcome. I wanted to bring one to the wedding, but uh," his expression shifted away guiltily, "Kara and I drank it on the way up."

Sharon laughed, and shook her head at him. "Why am I not surprised?" She hefted the bottle. "Let's go crack this open and celebrate. I'm not the only one who got married."

"I promised Karl I'd play pyramid with him when he gets off duty," Sam tried to demur and she punched him in the arm.

"Then I definitely have to get you drunk or you'll wipe the floor with him, and then he'll be cranky." She couldn't resist a smile and a tease, "Although Kara says you're a cheap date, so it probably won't take much."

He mock glowered, but accepted the challenge as she knew he would. "We'll see who drinks who under the table, Mrs. Agathon. Though I think Cylons have an unfair advantage," he whined, but it had no bite at all, holding nothing of the barb she was accustomed to hearing, even from Starbuck. Helo's voice didn't, of course, but then he rarely teased her about being a Cylon.

How did Sam accept her so easily, after all he'd seen and done? She had no illusions that he hadn't killed other Eights before, but here he was, bringing her presents and ribbing her like he would Starbuck. It was something precious, and she wondered how she could ever give him anything so important in return. Hopefully being his friend was enough, because that was all she had.

"I have no advantage that your six inches and fifty pounds don't make up for," she retorted and started down the corridor. "You coming, pyramid boy?" She waved the bottle at him. "There's another in my quarters if we run out. Come on, we've got to get a head start, or Karl and Starbuck will drink it all."

He hurried after her. "Good point."

As they walked, she marvelled that she should be here, a Cylon walking the corridors of the Galactica with her friend, the leader of the Caprican rebellion. Two years ago they would have killed each other without a second's thought, and now she would defend him, and she was sure he would do the same for her.

Everything in her life had changed, again, and finally for the better.

thanks! :)

I'm writing what would be a prequel, I guess, right now, so hopefully there'll be more soon.

*gleeful dance again*

I want the other side of this now, dammit.
lizardbeth: Anderslizardbeth_j on June 3rd, 2007 10:57 pm (UTC)
Hm, "Other side" meaning what exactly? Sam's POV, I get, but of this part, or how he figured out she was okay, or ...

The post-season three part! Where the shoe is on the other foot, so to speak. *preens*

ah yes. I was sketching that out already, but also thinking of doing a prequel-ish thing. Series! OMG!

Just another reason why I love Sam, the big lug.
lizardbeth: Anders - shirtlizardbeth_j on June 3rd, 2007 10:54 pm (UTC)
exactly. Sam's a Nice Guy, in addition to being a Big Damn Hero. What's not to love? :)

Way to go! Looks like your mojo might be coming back, huh. This was really great. Sorry my brain is too fried for prompts ATM, but I'll try to come up with something tomorrow.

thanks! Sometimes the mojo gets lazy and needs a good swift kick in the butt! *g*

oh, this was lovely! I really like the idea of them being friends during the down year (well, and after. ever, really.)

I think a series is a grand idea that should only be encouraged!
lizardbeth: Kara-Anders IIlizardbeth_j on June 4th, 2007 06:12 pm (UTC)

They are SO totally friends. He hugs her! AFter months of killing Cylons, no less. It's one of my favorite moments.
carpenyxcarpenyx on June 7th, 2007 12:14 am (UTC)
Oh! This was delightful. I really have been secretly intrigued with Sharon and Sam stuff, maybe not necessarily romantically but in the first episodes of season 3, I really saw something there... friendship wise. K, me rambling, lol. So this was great! :D
lizardbeth: K-A Rapturelizardbeth_j on June 7th, 2007 04:34 am (UTC)
Hee, thanks! I definitely got a definite friends vibe off them too, especially when they hugged on NC. But y'know, if only there weren't pesky Helo and Starbuck around, I would totally ship Sam and Sharon together! *g*
carpenyxcarpenyx on June 7th, 2007 12:42 pm (UTC)
Totally! It's so nice to know I'm not the only one who kinda wants to ship them, hehehe

Oh, I'd love to see a nice, friendly moment like this, when Sharon gets to be one of the gang, drinking and having fun. Thanks for posting this.

It'd be lovely to watch, wouldn't it? Sharon is doing pretty well, but she needs buddies to hang with!

Sorry it took me so long to read this. My backlog of unread fic just gets more intimidating by the day, but when I saw your new fic, I had to get caught up on this one and I'm glad I did.

This is just sweet (without anything cloying). I love Sam. He's just so open, unless he has a reason not to be and it makes me happy that he's a part of Sharon's small circle of true friends.
lizardbeth: Anders - no shirtlizardbeth_j on August 21st, 2007 10:14 pm (UTC)
thanks! Take your time - no worries. I figure you'll read them eventually/ Though I think it's a good thing that fic production has slowed somewhat for the summer, because yeah, I'm behind too - definite peril of being multifannish.

Though it was rather funny when I read this I presumed you were commenting on the most recent one, and I was confuzzled until I figured out what 'sweet' thing you were talking about. :)

*smooches you*

Lovely little story there. I've always liked the way the famous 'hug' was filmed. Sharon greets him as an old friend, and Sam's -- 'er...I've been killing you for the last few months...but thanks anyway' -- flicker of hesitation was priceless.

I can completely see that Sam would deal with Sharon's cylon-ness by cracking silly jokes about at, and sharon would just take it in stride.
lizardbeth: Agathonslizardbeth_j on August 27th, 2007 04:42 am (UTC)

And yeah, that hug is really what launched this. Because it's hilarious when he's all "I see you everyday" and she makes a little "oops, I forgot" face. But no question that they're friends. I'm sure Helo was glad enough to find a guy to hang out with who knew about Sharon and had already come to terms with it. Plus I like the idea of Helo and Anders as buddies.

Referring to your other comment, Sharon was relatively well accepted (although I also tend to think that Tigh and Kara's hostility was meant as a symbol that it still continued after the exodus from NC) and that very fragile time for the fleet and Sharon herself. We see those that have learned to know her better, like Hot Dog and Kat, really step up on her behalf. but there must also be those who'd side with Roslin and think that Sharon had no right to wear the uniform. And yes, there is much fic potential there! :D
ethnotechno on August 27th, 2007 05:11 am (UTC)
I think the opposition to Sharon would come more from civilians than the military. I'd assume everyone on Galactica had realized that they wouldn't have gotten off NC without Sharon. And the fact that Adama trusted her would be a big deal for military folk in general.

However, looking at how the civilian fleet freaked out in 'Sacrifice' over the mere existence of a cylon *prisoner*, I can't imagine them taking the idea of a cylon *officer* that easily!

Keep writing!
ethnotechno on August 25th, 2007 06:45 pm (UTC)
I've always wished to see more of Sharon's process of acceptance in the fleet, especially *after* New Caprica. At the end of Exodus and the next few episodes, it just seems like she's walking in the crowds (even civvies) with no repercussions. I can't imagine people who'd suffered under the 'skinjobs' on NC would just accept her without reaction.

Canon has to gloss over it in the interest of time, but I imagine there are some interesting gaps there for a creative writer like you to fill.

I have much love for Sam and Sharon's friendship, so it's nice to see a fic about it! Given that I only hover around BSG fandom, I have a hard time finding it. Thanks!
lizardbeth: Anders - cross outlizardbeth_j on August 31st, 2007 09:53 pm (UTC)
heh. you have a hard time finding it because it doesn't much exist. sadly. But thank you.

friending you. finally. :D
