trip roundup
Oh gosh I should write up our family trip to London!

So it started on the A380, which is kiddo's Favorite Plane Ever!!! and so he was  verrry excited to be flying it. (oh but wait, first the story of how I tried to download some things to the tab/iPad and discovered that amazon doesn't let you not stream, which hello, is exactly why I need to download shit in the first place in case the airplane did not have adequate entertainment. Which they did, but I was extra prepared. Anyway, so I downloaded these things, then discovered they were unplayable without wifi so I refunded them all, and then my credit card said "this is HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS". And tbh I'm okay with that, but I couldn't fix it until I was back).

We landed at Heathrow in the morning and had a transfer to our hotel -- which was funny because I have never had a car before take me into the city -- I always took the tube when I was at uni and visited. so it was interesting to drive in. Our hotel was over in the more business area near the Tower, not far from eh Gherkin (the bullet-shaped tower which kiddo LOOOVED. seriously, most of our trip had something to do with the Gherkin after that).

Let's see, so we saw the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the state rooms at Buckingham Palace (she's going to pass Queen Victoria for longest reigning on my bithday and so of course I was a sucker and bought the special commemorative cup), British Museum and Library (where there was a cool Magna Carta exhibit, cool not so much for various copies of Magna Carta which I've seen before, but because they also had one of the Worcester Chronicles on display which I studied and stared at when I saw the Actual Thing Just THere in the Case OMG, WITH THE PICTURE THAT WAS IN MY BOOK)  and anyway, that was exciting, in a nerdy way.

I also had a fun girls night out with rirenec and astreamofstars !  That was great!  But we didn't take a picture, boo. :(  And I realized afterward that I had worn NONE of the nerd things I had brought with me, but we had a good time and I'm so glad I got to meet you both!  (BSG still bringing people together, ten years later yay!)

The kidlet was far more excited by the engineering modern things: the Eye, despite how it seems to fall over whenever villains sneeze on it in movies), and the Shard. So we spend lots of money to look down on London in this trip.

the A380  (not actually ours, but the one next to ours. it's a biiig plane)

the back garden area of Buckingham palace, with all the tents/canopies for the end of the tour set up

From the Shard, looking at the Tower Bridge and east

looking AT the Shard, which really does tower over everything on the southbank.

looking up from the observation deck of the Shard toward the top levels. i thought it was cool. :)

Sounds like a lot of fun! Glad you're all back safe and sound.

It was wonderful to see you too! I had an excellent evening. And astreamofstars said the same thing about a group picture, minutes after we'd parted. Rats.

Over the above pictures, they're great! I'll have to go up the Shard someday.

I hope the writing has gone well this week! :)

right? So much for "selfie culture" - at least for us! But I'm so glad I got to meet you both. :D

Shard is pretty cool - though I do think they're trying to get back too much of the construction cost in the admission fees. IT'S AN ELEVATOR RIDE PEOPLE, I'm not flying on a plane!

Does the shard still look like the Eye of Sauron at night? I thought that was such a strange engineering decision...

Sounds like a wonderful trip!

lol, sort of? Though I get the impression from pics that they used to light up ONLY the crown, where now it's the top quarter/third of the building so less so, at least. I'm sure it doesn't stop people from making the joke, though!
