Fic meme answer for Black Sails at Dawn
[profile] dragoninthecup asked for Not All That We Are, Book IV: Black Sails at Dawn

But this is my favorite answer, so I'll leave this outside the cut. :)

10 If I had to sum up this fic in a sentence, what would it be?
If you don't like Cylons, Anders, and mysticism in BSG, oh boy, this fic isn't for you.

1. What was my inspiration for this fic? How did it come to me?

Well, the boring answer is that it follows the other bits of "Not All That We Are". So the real answer is that the whole novel springs from (a) the question of what an AU in which Sam knew he was a Cylon earlier would be, (b) the main inspiration was from the very cinematic image of Sam holding on to the outside of Cerberus amid a whole armada of Raiders, and (c) my personal hobby horse that being "chosen" sucks.

2 What’s my favorite part of the fic?
Focusing on Black Sails, one of my favorite parts is the new version of Crossroads, when Sam just lays it all out, the Raiders come to him and the Cylon civil war starts, right there.

3 What’s the part of the fic I’m most proud of?

A lot of it, but I think I'm most proud of, curiously, making a love triangle where I don't think I vilified anybody and it ended without making anybody awful or dead. And Sam genuinely loves both of them, but in the end, it was just too weird with Thea, remembering her as a 'child'.

Also I really like the way the Lords of Kobol/reincarnation stuff came out.

4 What part of the fic was the hardest for me to write?
OH, that would be the part between Kara's return and the "new" mutiny. I sat on that for YEARS.

5 What part of the fic am I still dissatisfied with?
Kara's adventure in PastLand is still just tremendously off-pace. And if this was something I was writing for publication I'd totally have to fix. Probably the end sequence could be filled out as well, since that was the last thing I wrote so it's the least edited (much of the earlier stuff was worked on a lot while it was stalled0
But I kind of stopped caring, it had lingered so long.

6 Who’s my favorite character in the fic?
well, Sam, duh. :) But of minor/"new" characters, all the "head"/angels were lots of fun. And of my own creation, I'm proudest of Thea, because she's still a Six, but also her own person.

7 Were there any major decisions I made about the fic that could have made it go a whole different direction?
well, I clearly didn't have to follow the general BSG plotline which would've changed things even more, but I'm kind of a 'small' picture changer for these kind of canon-divergent AUs, not giant ones. And tbh there's so little we know about the galaxy in BSG'verse outside of those handful of planets, there didn't seem much leeway (unlike say, B5 or Trek where there are all kind of planets. Most of BSG'galaxy is clearly not life-supporting or too far away for them to reach, so there wasn't as much choice on where to go.)

8 Was there anything I only learned about the fic after I had finished it? (themes, motifs, symbolism, etc)
after I finished it? I was just fucking glad it was finally done. But more generally, I was really amazed looking back that the water symbolism for Sam started so early - well before I had settled on his final identity or before I knew anything about Picon except that it existed as a colony.

9 Did anyone in the fic surprise me by doing anything? If so, what?
Hm. Kind of related to 8, but you would not believe how I stared in amazement when the deckhand in Face of the Enemy webisodes had a Poseidon medal. something which I imagine isn't even known much anymore, because the webisodes aren't available, but it fit in so perfectly. He's the one who's calling Sam, btw, not the Eights. something you'd probably never pick up without a reread, but is there. That one's intentional, but some of the later canon stuff (like No exit) merged with what I had planned without much adjustment (and some of it I kept different, too).

Other surprises included: how important Simon/Four became to things. He's right there in the rebellion from the start of Black Sails and he stays pretty vital, including when he's there with sam and Ellen at the end. Not really a surprise for this one, since he'd already become adorable, but CERBERUS. Best doggy Raider, or best doggy Raider? HE GOES TO GET KARA WHEN HE KNOWS SAM NEEDS HER. no, I did not expect that.

11 If I were to rewrite this fic, what would I change?
like I said above, I'd probably only change Kara's adventure to the past. And maybe clean up the assault on the Colony. Not tha I've re-read it for awhile, so I might think of more if I did, but, eh.

12 Did any thing about this fic’s reception surprise me?
not really. I knew the fandom was dying before I finished it.

If I were to write a sequel to this fic, what would it be about?

No. Hell no.

though I suppose the obvious sequel is to find out what happens when Thira blows up and forces their colony to resettle/scatter (AT LEAST SOME END UP ON MOUNT OLYMPUS Y'ALL IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING *G*), because yes, they're on Santorini pre-eruption. yes, I think I'm funny). But that would be all OC's so there's not much point.
