this is Winning!

OK SPLENDIFEROUS MOVIE. Erik wins all the things. And bb!Raven and Charles. And Erik and the leather jacket of unf. AND CHARLES AS RAVEN'S BROTHER.

the only thing I did not like was that I don't think they should have pushed erik so far at the end. He could've still left and still rescued Emma, but it felt like they pushed him to crazy-town. And THEN, the dorky outfit. The helmet alone was more than enough. we don't need the costume too. Too ridiculous for a movie that until then had done a fairly decent job of real-world explanations.

ok, not the only. Do none of these people know first aid? Erik removed the bullet, but no one thinks that maybe they should, y'know, try to stop the bleeding? (but, otoh, jfc, Charles, how stupid are you to say 'they're just following orders'? stick with the "innocent lives', young sailors, don't become a mass murderer...)

it kinda annoyed that they used Moira without using any of her background. She should've been named gabrielle Haller, who at least had the distinction of being around when Erik and Charles met in comics continuity and when they had their falling out, even if they used nothing else.

I also still can't stand diamond-powered Emma frost (it's become a symbol of everything I hate about how Morrison managed to make books I had enjoyed ones that I dropped after he came aboard.) And January Jones was surprisingly terrible. I am not one to usually complain about acting, but man. what the hell WAS that?

But those are really small complaints in the grand scheme of things. It had a story beyond "the origins of the X-men and the Brotherhood" and it was efficient about backstory and intros when it needed to be, but also slowed down to let both Erik and Charles and Raven breathe as characters.

I kind of love how Vaughn said fuck it if the continuity didn't match with the movieverse. it mostly matches, esp if you forget X3 and Wolverine exist at all, which suit me just fine. But the cameos were hilarious & perfect, and the jokes. hee.

But don't bother to wait til the end. There's no post credits easter egg. There was much booing in my theater on Friday, and I can't help but think it was a wasted opportunity. They should've had Charles meeting with Tony Stark's dad to get a new Blackbird, or played darts with Nick Fury. Or showed Jean being born. Or something fun anyway, even if it can't connect directly since it's set before the modern marvelverse movies.

THis post was also planned to be my Doctor Who post, but this has already sat in a tab long enough, so... post!
entertaining in a disturbing way: Can't be arrested for thoughtslyssie on June 5th, 2011 06:36 pm (UTC)
Erik ALSO MOVED HIM. I mean, I can guess that maybe Erik wasn't thinking "Charles got shot in the spine" BUT.

And I agree on Emma. I hate her diamond form, and as far as I'm concerned, that wasn't Emma Frost, but a pod person. Possibly one of he Austin Powers fembots.

yeah, that too. It's hard to tell if Erik believed Charles wasn't hurt too badly, or was just that cavalier about whetyher he would last long enough to get to medical help.

oh -- Diamond Emma is a symbol of ALL THAT WENT WRONg IN MODERN X-MEN TO ME. I haven't consistently read an x-title since that whole thing went down. And people just LOVE Morrison - *WEHATESHIMPRECIOUS*

I came out of this movie shipping Erik/Raven so hard. Like, part of me was all 'but he becomes a homicidal crazy person and takes her with him to crazy town', but then I was all 'but he's the only one who understands her and loves her for who she is'.

I read that, despite the cameos, this was basically a reboot, and the cameos were just for fun. And I'm totally OK with that. Especially if it means more X-Men movies with Michael Fassbender. Yummy.

It did seem to rush the timeline, though. Even if we don't care about continuity with the other movies. I felt like we should have seen Xavier talk Erik down. And then at the end he can still go rescue Emma Frost, but he's not full blown Magneto yet.

no question Erik understood her and knew what she needed to hear. They did a really good job with that, Charles vs Erik and how Charles loves her but doesn't really get it.

Though I have to say I think she's gonna bang Azazel first for adorb Kurt Wagner MUST be born :)

And yes! That's what I meant about the ending. I would've liked a more intermediate falling out , too. It really does seem that killing Sebastian unhinged him -- he kills Shaw and instantly decides to take up where Sebastian left off? WTH dude? I mean,it's not like I wouldn't be angry that both human sides I'd just stopped from nuclear war were trying to kill me, too, but it's also true that he stopped them pretty easily and no mutant had been killed. It just seemed too soon that he'd actually believe Shaw was right.
