Okay, so I'm writing fictional apocalypses to take my mind off real ones. And listening to Bon Jovi. I don't know, it's like comfort food I guess.

Family in Hawaii and extended clan in Japan are fine, so far as anyone knows. We got a bit of the wave here, but it was so minor you'd probably not even notice unless you knew it was coming. I've heard that the only thing that's likely to ever put us in serious danger from a tsunami here is if a part of one of the Hawaiian islands shears off into the water-- it's happened in the geological past but not likely in anyone's lifetime.

I just watched a YT video of someone who took video of storm surge/water rocking in a canal, and of wildly shaking power lines overhead. and even though the person obviously made it or we wouldn't have the video I was all -- DUDE, do not stand directly underneath power lines during an earthquake. Or another video where people went STRAIGHT TO THE BIG GLASS WINDOWS and I wanted to reach into my screen and yank them back.

Anyway, my heart is with those directly affected. I was here during Northridge in '94, and I remember I refused to stop beneath overpasses for, like, months, afterward, afraid it was going to collapse on me. So I know the fear lingers longer than you might think, even if you weren't hurt or otherwise majorly impacted.

My heart goes out to the people of Japan, and all the people impacted in various ways. I'm happy to hear that your family in both Japan and Hawaii are fine. I can definitely imagine that after being through something like that the trauma and fear would linger for a long time even if you weren't directly impacted in any physical sense. It's so terrible.

yeah, everyone I know was very fortunate.

It is very awful. :(

I'm happy your family is alright. This is scary even seen safely on the TV screen I can't imagine how it felt (I literally can't - I never felt a tremor) but watching it I sometimes couldn't believe how many buildings still stand. It is testament to the engineering advances and Japan consistently applying them.

I remember I was amazed when that 7 hit Seattle and basicaly nothing happend. Earthquake design really is quite amazing these days.

Too bad the quake was only a part of the disaster.

Hope you get confirmation the family is okay soon, waiting for news like that is the worst part. The videos that are coming out of this are astounding I don't know if the camera guys are really brave or just nuts.

Luckily close family is okay. thanks for your thoughts.

and some of those people were both brave AND nuts, I think.

I'm glad the family is ok! I thought about you and them as soon as I heard the news yesterday.

Which fictional apoco. would that be? ;>) I've actually been reading a lot of fic the last couple of days. OMG, I've missed so much! The baby will only sleep if he's lying on my chest and I've finally figured out how to balance him and the laptop at once, LOL!

haha, rugrat was totaly the same way - he'd sleep at night in the basinette/crib but he would only nap on me.

I have two apocafics - -BSG/B5 crossover and the other is Black Sails (sequel to Thread of Ariadne/Not All That We Are. The big-ass long Sam-Kara-Six triangle of Doom AU)

Sent you an email yesterday, was a little worried about your fam. Glad it sounds like everyone is okay.

I know someone in Northern Cali was taking pics of tsunami yesterday, was swept out to sea and the coast guard found his body. I think 3 or 4 other people were swept out and had to be rescued. This certainly could have been so much worse. Most damage on the west coast is pretty limited to boats and marinas in California and Oregon, right?
