The trouble with hit counts
When I post a multi-part fic to a place where I can see how many reads each part gets, I shouldn't look. It's depressing to know exactly how many people looked at part one and decided not to read any more. At least if it's a one-parter I can tell myself everyone who clicked on it actually read it (which is not true, but I can pretend).

But on the bright side I can presume that people who go on must think the story's okay, right?

Speaking of things that suck, I still have no voice. I'm like a boy frog going through puberty. Croak-squeak-whisper-croak I wish my vocal cords would just get better already.

And yet I have a new kick-ass Teyla icon, because she is of the awesome. Well, she would be, if TPTB ever got their heads out of their butts and let her be awesome again. So not all is bad.

I know the feeling....I've got a multi-chapter story, and the hit count just goes down, down, down.....

Though on one chapter, it had more hits than the one before it and the one after it...I'm like "Huh?"
lizardbeth: Maleklizardbeth_j on October 1st, 2006 06:46 am (UTC)
That's people skipping forwardto see if things get better/have more porn/whatever. For Going Home (which has the most chapters so it's easier to see), the last chapter also goes way up, telling me readers want to know how it ends, just not slog through how it got there. (but it's not slogging, it's not! *sniffle*)

I am sooooo there with you. Written in the Stars is taking its sweet time, and watching the chapter counts go up and down (usually down) can get downright depressing sometimes, especially since then you see the "The Carter-O'Neill twins save the world!" with 1004843439843084 reviews (okay, maybe I exaggerate a bit)....
lizardbeth: Baal eatinglizardbeth_j on October 1st, 2006 09:38 pm (UTC)
Not too much exaggerating really, considering the crap Sam/Jack fics I've seen with a gazillion squees...

Whining aside, I reconciled to low readership a long time ago. I've always known that the mega pairings are where to go to get the big readers, and I've never done it in any fandom. Multishipping and second-tier characters are not the way to win at fandom, but *shrug* what else ya gonna do when the most popular pairing makes you want to spork out your eyes?

Just Another Nutty Fangirlaudreyscastle on October 2nd, 2006 01:24 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'm not so much reaching for the spork with the onscreen stuff, because it hasn't gone there with undeniable proof...but a lot of the fic has me with spork in one hand and bleach in the other....

And I'm right there with you...if I wanted squees, I'd write S/J, but it's more fun to do the less mainstream thing.

Though Amanda had such a GREAT quote in an interview....on Sam, how she'd always hang herself up wondering what it would be like to end up with Jack....so she made a comment that they should get together, "have one night of wild, just incredible sex, then be like, okay, movin' on." I think you may have to save me from a lynch mob if I write that...I'm thinking I'll call it "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad"....
lizardbeth: Sam and Maleklizardbeth_j on October 2nd, 2006 03:58 am (UTC)
heh, I'm sure there must be S/J fic where it's not all 'let's get married and be in LUV forever and ever' and more of the 'wow is this a really bad idea'. But since I avoid the pairing label like the plague, I wouldn't know. :)

Yeah, I read that, or at least one of the interviews she said that. It was awesome, since it pretty much matched my idea of sam/jack. And I think the fact that she doesn't buy the UST either (and RDA's been playing it down for years and years) shows in the scenes they get shoved together by the writers in these later years.

It's one of those things i might have bought back in s.4 -- I didn't care for it all that much, but okay, it's canon, fine. But over time it just got more and more ridiculous. These are military officers, and yet they can't seem to make a decision? For ten years? It makes them both pathetic.

Yeah.... :) We could have a wedding!

....if you wanna torture the audience!

hmmm some of that was me. Thing was i was reading part one with kids around and they have this habit of reading over my shoulder so i had close the screen. Then the net died. So it took me 3 hits to read part one.
I can go read part 2 twice more if you like :P
lizardbeth: Markuslizardbeth_j on October 1st, 2006 09:45 pm (UTC)
If you want. :D

Actually this whining was more prompted by looking at the counts for Going Home, which has a drop off rate of about 20 % from first to second chapter. I attribute it to the Fan Awards mostly, since no one could tell from the nomination that it was -- gasp! horror! -- a Tok'ra fic, until they clicked on the first page. But then I did that to other authors too -- this is a mis-filed Jack/Sam fic, *back button* -- so I guess it's fair.

I was gonna ask -- did you want a particular screencap from Jeremiah? I'd be happy to make you some if you tell me what you want. I've got both seasons on my computer so it's pretty easy.

Telstelscha on October 2nd, 2006 01:44 am (UTC)
ooohhhh yes please :) I'd like one of Markus sleeping from Interregnum 2, one of Markus and Erin dancing from the same epi. I also need a nice one of the two of them in general.
When i wtite my tok'ra Oc Elise, she looks like Erin so i want to try and do a graphic of her and Malek ;)
lizardbeth: Markuslizardbeth_j on October 2nd, 2006 02:22 am (UTC)
aahh. no problem. :) isn't that the cutest scene, when he's pretending he's asleep? I love it.

Do you want their hair to match, between the Interrugnum pics and the general pics? His is pretty short toward the end of the season, IIRC. Or do you want one where it's curlier (like when he's Malek?).

Telstelscha on October 2nd, 2006 02:25 am (UTC)
Yep - i want to make a tired icon. lol. As its now 3.25am and i have already been awake an hour. Gonna be a case of get the kids to school and go back to bed again today.

it might be better if the general one matched Malek's please. Tho both charries are so similar it's incredible. Have you noticed how Markus walks with his hands behind his back at times?

Thank you for this :)
lizardbeth: Sam and Maleklizardbeth_j on October 2nd, 2006 04:27 am (UTC)
no problem. I'll poke around and try to find a good one of the two of them. The others are easy to grab.

But yeah, PS was definitely still in a Markus head-space when he was playing Malek. Of course, it probably didn't help that Peter deLuise directed him in both shows and wrote Malek for him. So between the two of them, it's not really a surprise. The similarity helps a lot for my AU epic, Distorted Reflections though... :)

gah, you and my kid. Nobody wants to sleep.

Drop off of 20%? HA! :D

My adventures of Geek Sam went from 1200 hits to 300 on the 2nd chapter - that's maybe what? 75% drop? and I know EXACTLY where everyone abandoned ship

Geek!Girl Samantha with the glasses and her team clocked in at nine point four seconds....

And sadly, Samantha Carter always has a thing for the leader of whatever version of SG1 she’s in. Irregardless of whether it’s Teal’c, Janet, Martouf, Narim, Daniel, Jonas or Jack, the leader of SG-1 makes Samantha Carter’s heart beat faster.

In this story, it’s just too darn bad that Jack’s a General.

lizardbeth: Sam and Maleklizardbeth_j on October 2nd, 2006 04:21 pm (UTC)

Dude, PIT OF VOLES! My 20% dropoff on Going Home is at Symbiotica. On ff.net it's like 60% and that's without a, ahem, evil genius pairing. :P

So you're not squicking people much more than me. :D
Nice to have our genius so appreciated isn't it? ;)

selmak on October 2nd, 2006 04:37 pm (UTC)
yeah, agreed, it's the pits of voles and vipers at FF.net. i rarely post at symbotica as my muse for Selmak/Jacob? Slain, sadly due to a variety of issues. - FF is the only place I'm brave enough to post. :P But it's so reassuring to actually get a piece of positive feedback from the vole-people. :P

As for evil Genius pairing? Welp, I guess that's my problem. I have a squicky pairing in two of my unfinished stories. :)
