Glaciers! At home!
A couple of days ago I stepped in a puddle of water on the kitchen floor. This isn't a weird thing, since Kidlet spills all the time. The following day, though, when he was gone, it happened again and I realized nobody'd spilled anything. The water had to be coming from the refrigerator. Which is never a good sign.

There seemed to be no obvious leaking from the back or the fridge side. So I pulled open the left door for the freezer. *boggles* The entire top THIRD of my freezer, very nearly encasing the entire ice maker mechanism and ice drawer was FROZEN SOLID.

Apparently the little arm that shuts off the water that goes into the ice cube tray got stuck, so the stupid freezer kept pouring water and freezing it, until finally the entire mechanism was blocked and the water had no place to go but the air vent out the back.

We figured our first task was to free the arm so we could at least turn the fucking ice maker OFF. We dumped all the freezer things into a cooler (luckily it all fit) and turned the whole thing off. Hubby has a heat gun (a souped-up hair dryer basically), so we took turns holding it at the ice. It took FOUR HOURS, just to melt enough to get the arm free. Turned the unit back on, tossed the frozen stuff back in, and went to bed.

The next day, we figured out how to hang the heat gun in position so we didn't have to stand there, just tend it. Several more hours of melting, allowed us to finally pull the ice drawer loose.

It was so dense in that drawer - I left it outside overnight AND all day yesterday (and it didn't get anywhere near freezing btw, though it wasn't sunny), and there was STILL a chunk of ice as big as a toaster left last night. But we managed to get it out and get most of the rest of the ice out of the freezer yesterday. There is STILL a chunk left where the water comes into the ice tray, but I think we can defrost it later. *sigh*

We think the door got left open a bit starting this whole catastrophe, but there might also be a leak in the ice tray. We're keeping an eye on it today now that we can kinda see what's going on.

But the ironic part of all this is that pretty much anywhere else in the country, I could put my stuff on the patio and it'd keep just fine!
