Public Enemies
We saw Public Enemies tonight.

If you liked Heat or any other Michael Mann film, if you like film noir (which it's not, not really, but they're sort of related), if you like Johnny Depp or Christian Bale, or crime thrillers, or men in fedoras with BIG FUCKING GUNS SHOOTING THINGS AND ROBBING BANKS, or period pieces, it is so well done. (if you like none of those things? um, possibly not for you)

And okay, the chronology is messed up, so do not take it as history, it's not. But still, it takes advantage of the real history to tell a concise story of Dillinger's crime spree, the girlfriend who rode with him, and how he was brought down (and also the simultaneous rise of the FBI and the spread of nationwide crime syndicates as side stories).

The accents are amusing to track - there's CB channeling Purvis' southern, David Wenham doing American, and Marion Cotillard pretending, well, less of an accent than she has in real life.

But you know what? I have something better. I have pretty pics from the movie.

aren't they cute?

Hats for men should come back. y/y?

also, hanging on the outside of cars shooting guns, not safe, but AWESOME.

"What keeps you up at night, Mister Dillinger?" (asks Agent Purvis)

*raises hand*

You've convinced me, pretty pictures seem to do that. Possibly also that quote. ;)

It was really on my list for awhile, but the good reviews are bonus evidence. I really need an actually good summer movie already, people! I've got..Star Trek? Is about it really.

Definitely worth twelve bucks and two hours of your time, IMO.

I'm quite often a "what the hell are they talking about, that Johnny's hot?" person. But damn, he cleans up well when someone makes him. And we all know I have a big crush on Christian Bale, so. yeah.

For a movie with no shirtlessness, and barely any jacket-less-ness, it's amazingly pretty to look at. :)

I thought the atmosphere of the movie was outstanding. The locations, the music, it was a superbly executed period piece. And then of course, Bale and Depp *SWOON*

But I want to beat Michael Mann to death with a tripod. I struggled through Collateral but I had to completely stop watching Public Enemies after about 20 minutes because I was so motion sick. There isn't one static shot in the movie. Everything is bouncing and panning around, pulling focus, jump cuts. I was so nauseated I really thought I might throw up for a while. Usually when that happens (hello Bourne Supremacy, I'm looking at YOU) I walk out, but Depp, Bale, Billie Holiday ... so I just put my hand over my eyes and listened. But yeah, it's called a TRIPOD or a STEADYCAM.

Le sigh. Arteest directors ruining my eye candy with overwhelming nausea does not make me happy.

aw, really? It didn't affect me anywhere near so badly but yeah, he does like his hand-held. I think that's a problem with going to high-def video generally - the cameras are so much easier to carry around, directors move it more than they need to. So you get the richness of the picture but then they go and ruin it by barely letting you look at it. :(

But still, SWOON-WORTHY, indeed. I'm not even a big Depp fangirl, but I thought he was looking mighty fine (whereas my Bale fixation is apparently sticking with me!) I actually thought at one time, 'NEEDS MOAR PURVIS.' heh.
