Grand Slam Con
*squeaky noises*

Actually I'm just tired. man, it's been a long dragging day, sitting around and waiting. But yes, it was fun! :)

Guests I saw: Michael Trucco, Nicki Clyne, Michelle Forbes, Colin Cunningham, and Dean Haglund.

Um, do I have to mention there are spoilers through "Daybreak"? (None for the Plan, since nobody asked about it)

Note I write this mostly for ME, to remember it later. TEAL DEER CROSSING AHEAD.

After I fixed up my C-Bucs shirt (pics later), I got on the road and went to the con, which was due to open at 2. Luckily it started a bit behind and gave me time to register. Still, I cut it a little bit too close.

The first guests were Nicki Clyne and Michael Trucco. I have pics (which suck, but I'll upload a few anyway). I was kinda hoping for Sbabe's Cally vid in front of the presentation, but instead they showed a BSG-general vid. "All Frakked Up"

They started with something they'd obviously planned, because there was only one chair on the stage. They did this little cute bit with Michael sitting in the chair and not letting her have it. Then he gave it to her and stood behind her chair, and it was just so CUTE. I already knew he was funny, but she's adorable, seriously.

Then he got his own chair (and seriously, this is a schtick with him, because he did a chair thing with JR back at Burbank forever ago, too. He did not however, have the same shirt he did back then, thank god) Oh, speaking of clothes, he was wearing jeans, white t-shirt, and a black vest. It looked hot (in my totally unbiased opinion!)

(you can't see her above, but this is after they come on, she moves to the left saying hi to everybody, and he "steals" the chair. "oh, did you want it?" Then below, he gives it up, but she thinks he's going to take it again. It was sweet.)

I took a few notes about their session so I wouldn't forget.

The first question went to MT about his appearance on Big Bang Theory. He said they'd called him for the role, and he wasn't familiar with the show. So he watched a few eps, thought it was funny, and agreed to do it. He was impressed with the cast, how even on the upteenth read-through/rehearsal they were still bringing the funny (even though he acknowledged he was basically the straight man the whole time and everything went around him). But he said he'd do it again.

Then someone asked NC about Cally's death. She told a funny story about the getting swept out the airlock, and how the harness jerked her really hard so that was her real fear. And Michael added a comment about how the show was ending anyway, so they didn't have to worry about what happened to her (he did that a lot, interjecting little comments which are hard to relate, but pretty funny). She said she was disappointed to be leaving, but that everyone kind of knew that it was the last season and there was going to be a lot of that, so it wasn't a big surprise exactly. Later on, she was asked whether she thought Cally was really going to airlock herself and the baby, if Tory hadn't interfered, and she thought about it, but couldn't really say. But she did say at toward the end that she thought Cally would be very pleased with Tory's death as an affirmation of Tyrol's feelings for her.

Oh, and she was also asked about Hotdog being baby Nicky's daddy and she laughed. "That was so out of nowhere." And she tried to remember if she and Bodie had shared a scene and could only come up with the boxing scene in UB when everyone was there (and MT snarks - "it must have been a really sultry look you shared.") But then, she said that Cally and Galen had never had sex anyway. She was being funny, but I think she was referring to the lack of any love scene. She met the cast in NY (while they were doing the top 10 thing) and someone told her about Nicky's parentage. She hadn't heard about it, being off the show, and called Bodie to demand why he hadn't told her. He didn't really have a good excuse, I gather. *snicker*

She also mentioned at some point-- oh yes, because someone asked if the two of them had wished to work together more (and he of course looks right at her and says, "with her?"). She said one of the things she wished was for more time for friendships on the show. That if Cally had had someone to turn to besides Cottle ("not the most sympathetic person on the ship") Cally wouldn't have been so desperate. yes, more friendships, among everybody. so say we all.

She's doing some sort of charitable work and just got her visa to work here in the states. And they riffed on that a bit, about how Canada has "just aboot the same language". cute. It made me really want to ask him to elaborate on the story about his trip to the island with Hogan from the magazine interview, but no time.

They both mentioned numerous times how Aaron and Eddie had, like, sources from god and they knew stuff way ahead of everyone. Aaron was the first to tell MT about their being Cylons - and Michael said he didn't believe it at all, except then it turned out to be true. His reaction was to be shocked and confused; his base for Anders was fully in the resistance, fighting, and he didn't get it. (Like no few of them) he had a phone call with Ron and Co to talk him down. Then he said he basically channeled all his own personal shock and confusion into Sam, that's what Sam was feeling.

Someone asked his thoughts on the finale. He loved it. He says he knows it's been polarizing, but from his perspective, that's what art is - it's supposed to be provoking and make you think and wonder and feel. He thought it was a great send off for Sam to go into the sun, and was flattered that he got to do that. He felt there was a great sense of closure to it all. (I LOVE so much when he does this, and gets all serious about the craft of it. Because he DOES think about it, and he clearly loves the show and being part of it SO much.)

The "goo" was not actually goo, just plain dirty water. "And like with so many things, it starts out as something you think sounds really cool. And then it's not." He had to be in there for HOURS (with, and I quote, "a little flesh colored speedo" on, and it was embarrassing, with all the crew standing around). Whenever he had to get out, he dripped all over the floor and they had to brings towels and stuff - not so much for him, but to protect all the equipment. He mentioned (again) how much he hated the bald cap and wished he'd just shaved his head. He was glad that eventually they got a stand-in for Sam in the long shots in CIC, but the guy they hired was super tall and built (and look, coming from him, that's saying a lot!). Guy was some kind of swimmer who actually did shave his head, and made him feel inadequate. heh. Welcome to everyone else's world, Michael!

His take on Sam and Kara's final scene: It was something he and Katee and Michael Rymer cooked up amongst themselves. Originally the script had his final words "I'll see you on the other side" written more robotically, and they decided that it should be a moment where Sam's self breaks through, a glimmer of recognition that he's still in there. And that's what Rymer chose. He also said it was his final scene with Katee, so it was all very naturally emotional for them after all they'd worked together.

The final question for him was how his accident changed things. And he said he doesn't really know though he thinks that it did. I suspect he knows a bit more than he's telling, but in the main, I think he was out of the loop, especially at that time with the accident and all. He knows (man, does he know, I think), how narrowly he escaped a wheelchair for the rest of his life, and he's grateful his recovery was so swift and that it happened to coincide with the strike. He didn't actually answer the question about how he was doing when he first went back, sliding into a thing about how it had all happened during the strike. But when he went back on set no one would let him touch things or do anything, which made him worried that they were going to put him in a bed. Then he kind of chuckled, and said something like, "which, yeah, happened." That was, I think the only time (besides bitching about the physical conditions), he expressed any kind of regret for how 4.5 turned out for Anders.

But that was all there was time for. :( I was in line to ask my question (which was going to be Sam's history on Old!Earth), but didn't get to. Sadly, with two guests dividing up the questions, it was just too short.

The next thing I did was the photo op, which if you know Creation cons you know it's an assembly line. But he admired my C-Bucs shirt, got my name, shook hands real quickly and we did the picture. Hopefully it'll turn out. *sigh*

Michelle Forbes

She was the next guest I went to see. She had just come back that morning from True Blood's season 2, which I don't watch, but if you do, apparently the series is going to kick ass.

The best BSG-related question was whether she thought that if Cain had survived, would she have ever seen her way clear to an alliance with the Cylons. And she was so funny, she kind of hmmms, and then says brightly, "No."

She was somewhat pursued for the role of Cain - turning it down twice and then Ron and David sent her DVDs and stuff, and she said she watched and just stared at it, and picked up the phone to say yes.

She was comfortable up there, with both the old Ro questions and newer projects. Then toward the end she made a funny comment about how all of us con-reporters should edit down our damn pictures. hee.

Colin Cunningham
For those who have seen Colin, he was ... calmer. *g* Apparently his rep of being manic boy is something he's trying to get a bit more relaxed about. (oh, yes, before his thing, I saw the Stargate Cantina vid again. which never fails to make me laugh, even though I've seen it, like, twelve times).

He did his bit in Continuum for basically scale payments, because the budget was already stuffed and he just wanted to be part of the show. Which, AWESOME.

He told the story of being in LA and out of work and poor and making the big move to Vancouver, to go to film school, with the intent of producing his own movies. He came under Don Davis' tutelage, and told the story of his first time working on Stargate with him. It was all a bit sad. But he's back here, looking for work. Living with his parents! (omg he was so funny about that, and he was very sure to tell us he was moving out soon! *snicker*)

And speaking of his own movies, the main thing he did was show his short film Centigrade. Which was shortlisted for an OSCAR (live action short). Which is well done and creepy. He told us that Callum (CKR) was originally going to do it with him and then couldn't, and I now kind of wish he had, cuz I'd have liked to see him do it .... sorry, Colin! *g* ) But it's a good little psychological horror flick (very Twilight Zone ish). It's on iTunes.

I also caught most of Dean Haglund's presentation, which... dude is funny. It started out kind of ordinary con stuff, but then Adam (big dude with Creation), got him started on his improv stuff. He did a little skit with an audience member who brought up his duaghter's prealgebra boook, and using a plumber persona had to respond to lines read out of the math book. And jesus, it worked. ROFL! He's very quick on his feet. I bet he was a blast at the cabaret night tonight, which I didn't attend.

The rest of the time I spent writing on MrLiz's wee computer while I waited for autographs. FOR HOURS. *snooze* There was a Peter mayhew panel and another one with a bunch of composers who weren't Bear or Joel Goldsmith; I blew both off. ANd OH! Remember, posse at the auction, the guy who kept buying up stuff, who wasn't a dealer? Yeah, I talked to him for awhile while he was in line for Michelle Forbes' photo op. He told me I should buy the pyramid ball, and I totally totally would, except... sigh. I have already blown my mad money and then some.

Finally, FINALLY, it was autographs time. This was my view right before people MOVED IN THE WAY. harupmf.

I had the day tix without the included autograph tix, so I ended up fifth from the very END of the line. I had a whole STACK of things, of course. ;) But that gave me a chance to talk a bit, which I did, and yay, I did not sound like a complete moron. He was happy to see the costume again, and I showed him the patches I'd got at the auction.

I told him I was part of a group of us who were big Anders fans and Sam/Kara fans, and he smiled and was very pleased about that. And I passed on that we fans were glad the final scene had played as it did, that it gave some hope back to them after a really rough season. (which in retrospect, made me really glad that I was near the end, since that hopefully is one of the things that he'll remember, at least in general. Maybe he can pass it on to Katee, in some way, that there are fans who loved the way they did that scene).

And also, I was the ONLY person, maybe ever, though certainly at the show today, who gave him the photo from my icon to sign. SCORE! \o/

(there was, by the way, only one photo available if you didn't bring your own. Sorry, peeps. You get what you get, but I think you'll be pleased.)

Then I shook hands again and that, was that. (and then I read the notice in the instructions that the guests had requested fans not to do that because of the PLAGUE. OOPS. Well, he initiated the one at the photo op, so it was too late by the autographs....)

I'm sorry I have so few pics, but all the rest were even worse. Yellow lighting and zoom do NOT mix well.

In posse news, I saw fellow Helo fan, MrsMayorofDogsville, there and got to talk with her some, when she wasn't acting as crowd control. We're going to try to go to the auction together.

Generally, Fridays are usually fairly quiet, which this one was too. Even for autographs, which weekend pass holders get one free, I think only about half were there, and a lot of them weren't at the panels. So it was pretty chill. But good times and I'm glad I went.

I think NC is utterly ADORABLE, and I think it's awesome they were there and being silly. <3 <3 <3

And yay! How much do I owe you?

:::bounce::: That is all truly awesome! I think I'm incoherent just from reading the report, much less if I'd been there myself.

Michael Trucco and Nicki Clyne...squeeeeee! Oh, I am so living vicariously through this post. I'm so glad you got to tell him about the Sam fans—so few of us show up on his website, so I'm always afraid he thinks we're it.
lizardbeth: Anders - greylizardbeth_j on May 3rd, 2009 12:20 am (UTC)
yes. Considering how far back in the line I was, it was a bit depressing to see how happy he was to hear that I was representing a group of S/K fans. Mind you, there were NO Sam/Kara photos available, so that might have brought more out of the woodwork and he WAS last minute, but still. At least he'll remember that some crazy chick in a C-Bucs costume gave him a handful of things to sign for all her friends who also love Sam and Sam/Kara. *sigh*

Glad you enjoyed it!

Too bad you didn't get to ask about Old Earth. It would be great to know what details they had down and which we can make up.

We know Sam was a scientist/guitarist and that he had a girlfriend and sometimes went to a beach. What about his parents? Or other family (I see him as a big brother type) and friends.

I love that everyone is so friendly at these things. Yes, Cally would definitely have lit up at the sight of Tory's demise. It's sad that she died thinking that Galen didn't love her (she probably thought he and Tory were part of a plan together)

lizardbeth: Anders- Helolizardbeth_j on May 3rd, 2009 01:02 am (UTC)
It was great to see him again, but yeah, too short to ask what kind of backstory for Earth!Sam he knew or made up for himself.

They play fanvids at the presentations? Wow.

And I second the Eeeeeeee! Thanks for sharing the pics (which don't suck!) and the stories. LOL, calling Brendon to demand why he didn't tell her he was her babby-daddy. :D

yes, more friendships, among everybody. so say we all.

That's kind of adorable.

Yep. They have music video contests and award oh so valuable $100 Creation gift certificates.

they play a lot of the SAME fanvids over and over again. but yes. Presumably they buy the musical clearance, though.

YES, OMG, I was so glad to hear his take on that final scene and that I had a chance to tell him that there were some of us who LOVED the way it was done. At least he knows, and maybe someday if it comes up with Katee, he can tell her that we're not ALL fanbrats.

hee, yes, I can't really do it justice how he imitated himself thinking the tub thing was cool and then it turned into a big drag, but it was funny. It does sound like he spent an awful lot of time in makeup and sitting around in the water doing absolutely nothing, though, no matter how much light he's making of it now.
