Road Trip Report
Things I learned while driving alone cross (part of) the USA:

1. My radio transmitter hooked into my iPod (so I could get my iPod to play on the radio - the car only has a tape deck) worked awesomely well. Except once. When I passed a trucker using the exact same frequency for HIS music, but with a stronger transmitter that completely blew my cheap little thing out of the water. But only for the fifty yards surrounding his truck. It was amusing.

2. Drivers are generally courteous. Except in Califonia where we are aggressive as hell. I swear I could feel myself shift into "California driving mindset". It's like a disease or possession or something that takes over your brain.

3. Dean Winchester is right. Classic Rock makes THE BEST driving music. Tori Amos? not so much. And Norah Jones is worse.

4. I do not have enough classic rock on my iPod.

5. Bottled Starbucks Frappaccinos are God's Gift to the caffeine deprived.

6. Freight Train whistles are VERY loud. Especially when you're trying to sleep.

7. I made 35 mpg in a car that's over ten years old. And I had expected to get maybe 20. WOOT!

I already knew this, but I was reminded of it again:

The Mojave Desert is the most BORING place to drive across in the universe. You know it's a dull drive when the sight of the big power lines marching across the desert is the most interesting thing to look at. Look, I like the desert, I grew up in a desert, but that? BORING.

But I arrived safe and sound, with the parents' extra car in good shape. And my rugrat was so happy to see me, it made it all worthwhile instantly.

So if I missed any good stuff while I was gone, lemme know.

Having driven in the desert before (NSWC China Lake CA to Ft. Irwin CA), not quite as long as you just did, I can identify with your experience. The most important thing is that you did it safely.

although I'm kind of a speed demon in my own car, this one wouldn't let me! but it was probably for the best and safer too, even though it made the trip even longer.

Glad you are safe and sound. And I bet it was great to see your rugrat after being gone for a while. Welcome back.

Thanks! And yes, I missed him SO much. more than I thought I would, actually. It's good to be back.

The Mojave Desert is the most BORING place to drive across in the universe.

200 miles of sticking as close as possible to the tractor-trailers so you can drive 105 and not be pulled over by the state fuzz. THAT is how you pass the time through the Mojave. LOL ...

LOL! if only the car didn't start shaking when I pushed it to 85... *weeps at the thought of doing 105* I had semi-trucks passing ME. Now THAT was embarrassing! *g*
