on the teevee
Goodness, there's suddenly TOO MUCH TV. there already weren't enough hours in the day, and now there are even fewer.

So, two I wanted to blabber about -- TVD- The Hybrid and Person of Interest.

First, Person of Interest.

It really is. Which is probably why I kind of love it. If you think of Finch (Emerson) and Reese (Caviezel) as Bruce Wayne and Batman respectively, it's almost exactly Batman Begins, but set more in our world, with no capes or clowns, just bad guys and our not-quite-good vigilante hitting the crap out of the bad guys. Reese even goes around the world looking for bad guys to make himself feel better, and realizes there are plenty right there at home.

Also, Jim Caviezel has always been Christian Bale Lite, so that probably doesn't help my comparison, but that's okay. Critics were complaining that he's underplaying too much, but I liked it. He showed flashes of a slightly psychotic glee, and he's not supposed to be exactly WELL. I really don't need another show determined to be "witty". I'd rather he stay very dry, because that was really funny to me. (I mean, c'mon, how is it not funny that he gives the little stooge a lesson in why holding your gun sideways is stupid?) It definitely fulfills that dry, dark humor part of MY funny bone.

It's also somewhat amusing how the show is accidentally set up to be as fanfic unfriendly as it possibly can be: The regular cast is teeny, just the two of them (and as much as I think Emerson is awesome, I can't imagine he's going to be a popular slash subject, though I'm sure fandom will prove me wrong), and Taraji Henson who's only met Reese when he was a derelict so the possible het ship there doesn't exist yet.

I do hope that CBS lets them develop at least a bit of an arc though. Given Hawaii 5-0, maybe they won't be relegated to CSI-levels of procedural-ness, and will be allowed to explore the format and the characters a bit more serially. I mean, seriously, why would they even want a series from Abrams and Jonathan Nolan if you weren't going to let them off the procedural chain once in a while?

So, anyway, I'm sure this won't be everyone's cup of tea. But it fits nicely into that slot in my fannishness while I await Dark Knight Rises and watch clips of Christian Bale hanging out with Terence Malick at the Austin City music festival. They are both so brilliant, but so STRANGE.

ONTO Vampire Diaries for more darkly humorous proceedings:

He's not scary at all, but Klaus sure is funny. Unintentionally so, most of the time, but still. His little pouty face when he sees that his plan has been a big fail? COMEDY GOLD. And then he was all "I AM SO ALONE EXCEPT YOU STEFAN". also funny. because dude, if you weren't such a prick maybe people would like you? JUST SAYING

Stefan needs to work on his poker face. I was sure Klaus figured out Elena was alive just from Stefan's worried face. It appears not, but it was close. But our Stefan was in fine form today, bitching at Klaus. lol

Also, isn't building a hybrid army kind of... difficult, what with the scarcity of werewolves? It's not as if they can make more of themselves with just a bite or potion, they apparently breed the old fashioned way. So making more takes awhile. (and it's unclear to me whether once he makes them into vampires, whether they can still breed. I would think not, though, so he's cutting into his own supply turning them). Klaus is really not the sharpest tool in the shed, is he?

On to other things -- Carol Lockwood, YOU ARE AMAZING. I kind of love her now. She tested her son, smartly, with vervain, and then watched him turn INTO A WOLF (something horrible and painful and I can't even imagining watching my son go through that). Then she changed her mind about Caroline and wanted to save her!

AND THEN CAROLINE'S DADDY WANTS TO KILL HER BECAUSE SHE'S A VAMPIRE. Poor Caroline, but omg. that was the best. HRG, Jack Coleman, you are great. (and also, isn't it actual canon that caroline's dad is gay? and that's why he left Liz? or did I make that up?)

I am now convinced that the show made a VERY STUPID mistake not de-powering Bonnie when they had the chance in the ritual to raise Jeremy. That's a very obvious reason they're keeping her off screen - she can solve too many problems. Which I figure means they plan to bring her back to solve one or more of these issues, but sucks in the meantime.

Matt and Jeremy - ah, at least we got to see Anna for a moment there? that was the best part of their deal.

Damon. *sigh* Y'know, it's funny but I've read some people comment that Stefan's okay when he's not around Elena, and I kind of feel the same about Damon. I GET him when he's around Stefan. I liked their moment in the woods when Stefan saved him. But that whole thing with the river and Elena? WTF WAS THAT? Dude you pushed her in, so shut up about making her get out. And then at the end, while I'm glad he's finally on the "Let's not give up on Stefan train", I don't get the rest of it? "remember how you felt when he was gone?" -- I know what they WANT me to take from that line (that Elena was thinking how she felt Damon was awesome or whatev), but the only thing we KNOW about what she feels is that she wants Stefan back and she will go face down werewolves to try to do that. Also that Damon is annoying as fuck, and pushes her into rivers because he is TWELVE. That's what I would be feeling. And sure, she doesn't want him to die. Argh. DAMON SHUT UP.

and now I will finish formatting part 4 of the fic.

I want to thank you for recommending Person of Interest with the idea that Caviezel is Batman, I just watched the pilot and that little hint made it so much more delicious, and I really hope that they make Emerson morally dubious because he does that so very well.

Also, the idea behind the gimmick is kind of worrisome, that the US already live in a panopticon and the only reason it's not exploited fully is because the govt ignores everything below mass killings. I hope they don't import that AI over to the UK because we've got more CCTV & our local govt is willing to use anti terror laws against benefit cheats.

I didn't go into it with that idea, but when they mentioned that part about Reese going around the world looking for badguys, and I was all -- waitasecond I remember that from Batman Begins... and then it hit me. You even have the billionaire do-gooder - it's just a separate person. And then Detective Carter (I think? whatever her name is) is going to end up their commissioner gordon. Makes it even more fun. :)

its Carter.

not sure if its an oversight, or the sort of change that the pilots of Dresden Files and John Doe had. (but if its that, then surely she would at least be credited for the pilot)
lizardbethlizardbeth_j on September 26th, 2011 05:58 am (UTC)
(Assuming you meant to direct this at me)

It's an oversight - Taraji Henson is a regular . In fact she recently confirmed it, upset she wasn't in the key art despite being a regular.

and I'll check it out tomorrow. :)

(directed to both participants in the conversation)

oh good (about it being an oversight)...looking forward to seeing her in key art.
what made me nervous about that, was that Det. Carter is addressed simply as "Detective" several times in the pilot....and that page has 'Detective" being portayed by someone else.

no rush...you hurler of plot bunnies. ;)

ps: wait, you watched Fairly Legal too? any news on if its returning? *I ask, hoping it will*
rodloxrodlox on September 26th, 2011 03:14 am (UTC)
Person Of Interest was great to watch. and if you're right about it in regards to het and slash, then that leaves gen; fun!

though I can picture Reese saying to her, "I'll answer anything you ask me, after you go on a blind date with my friend. No weirdness, but he's a bit of a recluse," in an effort to find out more about Finch.

or Finch has accidentally just built SkyNet. (seriously, he taught it to decide)

EDIT: or crossover with Covert Affairs, after Reese's comments about being in the Agency.

Finch totally built Skynet! and hey, we even have a "john" and a "reese" :)

OH SURE, TEMPT ME WITH COVERT AFFAIRS. Since Auggie would recognize that voice and surely knows from the prints left all over that Reese isn't dead..
rodlox: Ancient Mairodlox on September 26th, 2011 04:29 am (UTC)
don't let John Connor find out...oooh, that'd be angst, right? finding out SkyNet started out its career saving people.

tempt? I never tempt. I merely offer, and bounce plot bunnies back and forth until eitehr they're ready for eating, or one of us starts writing. ;)

my Auggie muse is saying "He left *his* prints behind? Either he's getting sloppy, or he's up to something."

lizardbeth: auggielizardbeth_j on September 26th, 2011 04:52 am (UTC)
good I'll leave it to you, then. :)

Auggie would know (or could find out) what happened to Reese and would therefore guess, same as Finch, that he was trying to get himself killled. Wouldn't surprise me if Auggie actually helped bury his identity. And then I'm sure he was off-the-grid for awhile drinking himself to death in NY, and then, suddenly, NYPD is looking for the prints again so Auggie knows his old buddy is still alive...
rodlox: Be careful what you writerodlox on September 26th, 2011 05:02 am (UTC)
okay, I'll go and -

I see what you did there. ;)

>Auggie would know
>is still alive...
and the bunny just clamped onto my throat. BRB.
