Weekend funstuff
We went and saw Suckerpunch on Friday.

First of all, I keep seeing people commenting in disapproval at the MPAA that they cut out some kind of sex scene/makeout scene btw Jon Hamm and Emily Browning to get the PG-13. Having seen the movie knowing about the cut, I can't say I miss it. He plays the person Babydoll is TERRIFIED of. He is, in fact, the reason everything happens. So I don't think they cut it because it was 'too racy' -- I think they cut it because there's nowhere in the movie it could be consensual. But let's not let facts get in the way of rushing to have an opinion, right?

Anyway. The movie.

I... am conflicted. There are some parts I really liked, and other parts I really didn't. In general I like the idea and I liked most of the execution, the action is decent and occasionally awesome. There are a few things that didn't work - it tries a little too hard to be Inception-like or profound, which falls pretty flat, but at the same time, at least Snyder tried to make it about something, which I give him some credit for that.

The film's taken some criticism for getting cut to get its PG-13 rating, but... (and this isn't something I say all the time), but I think it might have helped the movie. It cuts back some of the violence which I, for one, appreciated. But even so, there are three attempted rapes -- all stopped before they get very far, which is good, but still. UGH. LEAST FAVORITE PARTS.

Ok, so if you've seen the ads you know they're dressed kind of fetish-y, which, eh, I don't care about particularly (esp since they don't wear that in the 'real' world), but yes, they show cleavage and wear impractical footwear. They also shoot guns - lots - and Emily Browning gets a sword, too.

Leading to some of my favorite scenes when she uses sword AND gun, together. IT IS AWESOME.

So the kickass girls quotient is very high, but the movie is also pretty frakking bleak in the non-kickass parts. They're trying to escape, because their lives really, REALLY suck.

And the movie is way too influenced by Alan Moore and/or The Dirty Dozen for it to have an ending that makes the movie easy to like. I think the ending works, but it's not something that will get people all "rah rah" for it.

So, in sum? I don't even know. I'm rarely ambivalent about movies, really. I tend to focus on the things I like, and ignore or fanwank the rest. This movie makes that very difficult, which in a way, I think is a good thing. I've certainly thought about it a lot more since Friday than I do most movies, trying to figure out what I feel about it.

Oddly I think that reaction will probably not be ambivalent -- people will either enjoy it (the girls behind us were already making plans to go back), or not like it all. But I guess that tends to be the reaction to Snyder's films in general. Which will make his Superman an interesting test of how willing he is to adapt to the material, rather than adapting the material to his style and interests.

And in other news for this weekend --

we had rain last night, but it cleared up by afternoon. The wind was a little chilly, but there was some sun. Rode the ferris wheel on the pier and kidlet did the bumper cars 4 or 5 times. Enough so some older teenage boy looks at him the last ride and goes "You again?" in a very funny mock-despairing tone (kiddo is a TERROR at bumper cars. very gleeful about bumping.)

I learned how to send photos from my phone to my twitter (oh dear)-- http://twitpic.com/4e4il1 (a view of Santa Monica beach looking north, from the top of the ferris wheel)

Also I have been writing Fairly Legal fic. oops?

My dear, I'm afraid it was only a matter of time. And I'm kind of surprised it took this long.

Also, I'm officially 15% done reading your story and I really like it. Just sayin'...
