BSG: Daybreak, part One
TWO HOURS LEFT! (or really only 85 minutes, or thereabouts. cheaters.) *CRIES*

"All this has happened before...."

That's what the flashbacks are showing us, I think. The flashbacks show us where these characters started. And you'll notice, if you look, that where they started looks an awful lot like where they're about to end:

THEN and NOW:

Roslin: she had to bear the loss of her close-knit family. (I'd wonder if this doesn't mean Laura's going to outlive Bill and Co, except we've already seen the flashback of Laura's cancer diagnosis, which maybe serves as a sort of second half to tonight.) But how wonderful was she with her sisters?

Kara: loved a man, who is about to die (is dead), and Lee was there, wishing it was him.

Lee: wanted to get a flying bird/pilot out of his house/heart, and caused destruction by failing. (The bird could also be Zak, who was also a pilot and whose death caused such misery to his house, but I think it's Kara).

Bill: about to leave Galactica

Gaius: was desperately searching for approval from a man who didn't believe he had changed

Caprica: wanted to help a father reunite with his child.

Sam: was in a bathtub then, and hey, guess what? (and damn you, Ron, I would love his love for physics, except it obviously means we're not getting him back. You want us to believe he would WANT to stay a fucking hybrid and see the perfection of the universe or whatever. IT'S STILL HORRIBLE) But I'm glad we got to hear him talk like a normal person (er, kind of. That still wasn't quite Sam, really, because Ron was trying too hard), but at least he had his hair back and shirtlessness is always acceptable.

So it's all part of the circularity of the theme. I suspect there'll be another round of flashbacks that will really drive it home. Baltar will get off his ass and visit his father, and in the now, he'll go with the mission; Lee will let the bird fly free and finally let Kara go, in some significant way (either he or she dies, I think. I kinda want Kara and Sam to take the ship out in a blaze of glory together, because otherwise I think he stays a hybrid but she stays with him, and that would just be too tragic for me. Which is why that's what's going to happen. Remember, Jacob's rule of BSG: EVERYTHING YOU WANT IN THE WORST POSSIBLE WAY. Trufax. I forgot for awhile and have since regretted it deeply. "You want Kara to admit her love for Sam? Okay, here you go!" ... "I TAKE IT BACK!")

Anyway, that's how I'm interpreting the flashbacks for now. But yes, I like them - I like backstory tidbits generally anyway, I like the symbolism and even the edge of destiny about them, that everything these characters were then, is what they have become again, even though they've changed so much in between. We'll see what next week brings.

Other thoughts about the ep, now that I've done my Very Important Thinky Thoughts:

- Athena and Helo - please be okay? please find Hera and be okay? You're killing me.
- I guess they don't have any salt left, or they'd be using that instead of tape. But still, love that. And I love Roslin practically staggering her way down the line. gods. Everyone was watching her too - I doubt that Adama would've gotten as many people if she hadn't shown up.
- Bill, don't be such a coward and talk to Sam your own frakking self. You think it's any easier for Kara to see her HUSBAND in there? jeez, suck it up. And also your attempt at comfort comes too late. It would've been nice for you to drop by Sam's bedside while she was there, every single damn day for weeks, and offer some support then.
- the passing of the word about the mission was great.
- Racetrack and Skulls, thank you for being useful again. Though, y'know, I was kind of hoping you were gonna get caught in the black hole's gravitational field and die tragically. too bad.
- the "three generations of Adamas" was a lovely meta moment, though it kind of cracked me up too. (what? you know Hotdog totally is Bill's love child.)
- Ishay wants to go rescue Hera on a probable suicide mission? O RLY? (how funny would it be if, at the end, Lee and Ishay are some of the only people left and he takes her hand? Hee. ok, I know it won't happen, but still, that promo of them was awfully cute. And I notice Kerry was in the front credits.)
- oh and also, y'know all the bottle shows for the last few eps? yeah, that was to pay off all the cast they needed for this finale. (except for Leoben. damn it. They're not going to have the finale and not have CKR come back at all, are they? *sad* did all the Twos kill themselves when they realized Kara was way out of their league or what?)
- poor Tory, she has nothing to do. Why couldn't SHE be the one in the goo bath? That'd give her something to do and we could have Sam and Kara being all badass together, taking out Cavil.
- Chief. Kinda hating you right now. STFU.
- "a bunch of dots". hahahahaha. John Cavil is a pathological planner, but he is not as smart as he thinks he is. But yay, Simon and Doral are back - even if they still have no perceptible personalities. bummer.
- unlike the last two eps I didn't feel like important bits were left on the cutting room floor. The only obvious missing piece was Bill and Kara talking to "Sam", but its absence didn't really bother me.

- oh, and Hoshi. Was anyone else filled with forboding when Tigh cracked about him becoming admiral? Because you know who SHOULD be admiral if Bill and Tigh are gone -- Helo. Hoshi would only be next if Helo's not there. crap. Also the symbolism of Hoshi trying to clean up the mess? hmm...

Next week: JUMP! (ok, I kinda want to see Trucco do that orgasmic thing, I admit)

And then I watched my Bruins get their asses kicked. damn it, team!

ETA: Apparently many parentheses died in the making of this post. my bad.

They gave her something to do! Be Evil Cylon Cliche #5 and cry during sex with Baltar.

*sulks*

There's an Evil Cylon Cliche #5? :P

I vote for Tory in the goo tub too...her forlorn looks of "damn, I really am useless aren't i?" make me think she'd prefer it. And it'd be so much more dramatically relevant to have Sam with the rest of the Final Five when they're fighting against the man who screwed them almost from the beginning.

Speaking of that, I didn't get the feeling that RDM was trying to imply that Sam wanted to be a hybrid. Why do that after he had Kara ready to do the mercy kill like in Lay Down Your Burdens? It would ruin that moment, plus her discomfort about it in this ep too. I did find the flashback speech totally in character for Anders, because I love his thinky moments like in Taking a Break or He That Believeth In Me. Same principle, just slightly different words and themes.

lol...yeah, Ishay on the suicide mission? Fanservice, since we know who she is in real life.

But poor Leoben. I'm gonna be mad if he's not in the finale. Same if I don't get happy Agathons in the finale. Those are two things I do actually care about, where most other things I can see several acceptable endings.
lizardbeth: Anders- Helolizardbeth_j on March 14th, 2009 04:36 pm (UTC)
yeah, Tory. And Tyrol's "you got anything better to do" was a rather meta commentary, wasn't it? heh.

Poor choice of words I guess. I don't think wanted to be a hybrid, because no, I think Kara's move to shoot him was probably out of knowledge that she knew he wouldn't want it. I meant more in terms that we're not supposed to think it's horrible for him, that he actually kind of likes it, when he STAYS that way. But since I don't buy that Sam would like to be a personality-less THING, it smacks of retcon to justify the ending, to me, and I find it less comforting than Ron probably intends.

CKR doesn't list the finale on his page at imdb, which is not super accurate, but considering he IS listed for the Plan, I'm not encouraged. *VERY SAD*

and damn you, Ron, I would love his love for physics, except it obviously means we're not getting him back.

Ah crap, you read it that way too? I hate it when smart people see it the same way as me, now I'm just sad again. It wasn't so much what he was saying for me as the timing of those weird close-ups during the perfection speech. I see what you're doing there, show....

But, I'm not sure I had the impression that hybridization was what he wanted. Even though it's probably a lot more fun for him than for us or the characters to watch.

ok, I kinda want to see Trucco do that orgasmic thing, I admit

That'll help a bit though, yes. ;)

I love your analysis on the flashbacks. Seriously. I thought the bird was Zak then, but also pulling double duty foreshadowing for Kara now, yes. Laura's family was lovely.

And Bill Adama can go die now. Hey, it's looking likely right? But he'll get the BiG Damn Hero send-off too, which will make me cranky. SIGH.
lizardbeth: Anders-Kara - don't dielizardbeth_j on March 14th, 2009 04:29 pm (UTC)
But, I'm not sure I had the impression that hybridization was what he wanted.

well, I don't mean "wanted" in the sense that if you'd asked him in Season two he would've been all "Dude, that sounds AWESOME!" because no. Or even that if the Cylons had asked him he would've said yes. But I do think it's meant to imply at the very least that STAYING a hybrid wouldn't be a curse for him. Which I guess I should find comforting, but I just find it a retcon to justify the ending, so it annoys me.

And yeah, if the director's hand hadn't been quite so heavy in that scene (I thought Sam was projecting it at first, since it seemed sort of surreal) and his little speech hadn't run quite so long, I wouldn't have been so convinced. But, yeah. *sigh* C'mon, Ron, you can resurrect everybody if you want to, DO IT.
The NewroticGirl: BSG waldonewroticgirl on March 14th, 2009 06:04 pm (UTC)
I'm a bad person, because when this exchange happened:

Adama: Do you know how to turn him on?
Kara: (whatever she said)

I thought: of course she knows how to turn him on, they've been frakking for years now. ;)

hahaha! yes, that is so true!

Though I wish it weren't so LITERAL. gah.

You want us to believe he would WANT to stay a fucking hybrid and see the perfection of the universe or whatever.

Is that what we're supposed to believe? *cries*
Because I don't!

did all the Twos kill themselves when they realized Kara was way out of their league or what?

This line makes me want to laugh... but I'm seriously irritated at the lack of even Faux!Twos with bad shirts.
lizardbeth: CKRlizardbeth_j on March 14th, 2009 08:09 pm (UTC)
I KNOW! no Faux!Twos wandering around, at least not that I've noticed. Bah. If it's true that CKR's not in the finale, hopefully Ron will write in some kind of explanation. I assume they've held off so far, not wanting to close the door if he was able to come back at the last minute, but if not, they should tell
us something.

SAM!!!!! Seeing him there all normal and hot and talking like a person again, just made me miss him more! *clings*

Racetrack and Skulls, thank you for being useful again. Though, y'know, I was kind of hoping you were gonna get caught in the black hole's gravitational field and die tragically. too bad.

Stupid black hole. The least it could've done was suck up those two frakkers. *sighs*

The Hoshi bits...*shakes* with fear of what they were meant to foreshadow...

I loved your analysis of the flashbacks and it made me feel better for not hating them (as most people seemed to). Still hoping they'll make more sense after next week...

...And I agree that I'd prefer to see Kara and hybrid-Sammy go down in a blaze of glory 'cause I don't want him to be a hybrid FOREVER! (still *clinging* to the possibility of SOMEONE restoring the resurrection tech so MY Sammy can reunite with HIS Kara and live (reasonably) happily ever after). (Like you, I have an addiction to parentheses!!!)
lizardbeth: Kara-Sam -Demetriuslizardbeth_j on March 14th, 2009 08:03 pm (UTC)
I would love for Galactica and Kara and Sam to get all shiny and resurrected after their blaze of glory - but, I don't want to really HOPE for it, y'know? It would be too much of a fairy tale, probably. *sad*

But OTOH, it seems unlikely that Galactica's making it out of there, so Sam the Hybrid forever also seems unlikely (unless the ship stays on the edge of the singularity in which case time is a pretty slippery concept). But, I'm just going to try to take it as it comes at this point and try to not set myself up for any particular expectation.
mrsdrjackson: *hugs* S/Kmrsdrjackson on March 15th, 2009 02:44 pm (UTC)
Sam in the goo is breaking my heart each week. I almost want the show to be over, so I can go back to season 2 and remember the Sam I Kara fell in love with.

Caprica: wanted to help a father reunite with his child.
Caprica crossing the line, looking all wounded but determined to go just KILLED me. She has always believed in the importance of Hera and with her current mental state she is the perfect person for a suicide mission. I hope she survives though, I've gotten rather attached to her.

Now if only Gaius would get his ass in gear and cross the damn line...
lizardbeth: Kara-Anders last supperlizardbeth_j on March 16th, 2009 07:48 am (UTC)
Sam in the goo is breaking my heart each week.

Dude, I know. Me too. Just let him RECOGNIZE Kara before the end, gods. I mean, so far, we have nothing to say he's not just dead and all this hybrid business is basically just animating his corpse, y'know? It's awful. I want him to be in there and know that Kara's had this grand epiphany - because otherwise it's really kind of hollow that she has all this grand sacrificial love for him, if he doesn't even come back to acknoledge it. I don't know - when the best you can hope for is pretty much one nice scene of wakefulness followed by blaze of glory.... *cries*

Yes, exactly, with Caprica. She left the Cylons for HERA, not for Gaius, after all. She killed Boomer for Hera (and D'Anna for Sam, which is even more awesome in retrospect). Maybe she'll get to kill Cavil to save everybody, since she's like go-to girl for Cylon execution.

Gaius has to cross the line. No way Gaius and the arming of the cult isn't coming back into play. They butchered Deadlock to make sure we got that bit with the guns.
cujoycujoy on March 16th, 2009 12:34 pm (UTC)
I'm also trying to keep my hopes and expectations lowered. I think there pretty much has to be a real moment between Sam & Kara before the end to justify this entire storyline for both of them. MT recently said on Bear's blog that the over-arching truth of his character is Sam's love for Kara Thrace. I hope that we get to see that.
mrsdrjackson: *hugs* S/Kmrsdrjackson on March 16th, 2009 02:27 pm (UTC)
Yes. EXACTLY that. *cries* I need him to acknowledge her love and how far she has come as a person. Hybrid!Sam is horrible but if we can get just one scene with him and Kara when he's not a jibbering pool of goo I won't hate RDM forever. I really hope we get the blaze of glory. If he has to be a hybrid let him go out with a bang - though I am still hoping for a Kara-style resurrection!

Maybe she'll get to kill Cavil to save everybody, since she's like go-to girl for Cylon execution.
Oooh, I would be happy with that. Cavil sees her model as nothing more than a prostitute I bet - dying by her hands would just be the last emo straw for him. :D

*clings to hope* I think you're right. I want you to be right.
