BSG Prequel announcement
Here's the announcement from Sci Fi Channel about the prequel:

SCI FI Announces Caprica

NEW YORK—SCI FI Channel announced the development of Caprica, a spinoff prequel of its hit Battlestar Galactica, in presentations to advertisers in New York on April 26. Caprica would come from Galactica executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, writer Remi Aubuchon (24) and NBC Universal Television Studio.

Caprica would take place more than half a century before the events that play out in Battlestar Galactica. The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better.

But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot: a Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the commander of the Battlestar Galactica), Caprica will weave together corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into television's first science fiction family saga, the channel announced.

"First science fiction family saga?" erm, I daresay the Robinsons were first...

Interesting, but I wouldn't expect to se anything soon. Sounds like a far off concept. That being said I guess they have confidence is BSG for the long hall to be even thinking of stuff like this.

They don't give presentations to advertisers too far in advance, since they (the advertisers) are there to buy slots for the upcoming season. There also has to be something to show, like animations, concept designs, some kind of trailer to give a taste of what the show will be like. They probably haven't cast it yet or have more than the basic bible of the show and the pilot script (I doubt Sci-Fi would approve it without those), but it's not all that far off. My guess would be January, but if they move quickly it could show up with BSG's S.3 premiere in Oct (and might be the reason S.3 is so delayed).

But yes, you're totally right that the channel has a lot of faith in BSG to commit to a series off the bat, instead of just buying a miniseries first. It'll be interesting to see how they do it and if they can carry it off without turning it into 'Dynasty with Robots' or a painfully slow version of Terminator 3. I'm curious to see who they'll cast as a young Bill Adama, since we all know what EJO looked like as a fairly young man.

Young Bill Adama would be a tough call. Since the older Bill Adama is so strong.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.
